Does anyone else think about going to bed midway through their day? Somewhere around 1:30, I usually get to the point where I’d give anything for a 12 minute siesta. Piggy bank contents, retirement savings, first born if I hand one… whatever.

So it’s actually kind of annoying that when I actually have the opportunity to sleep - like a cozy bed, pj’s, and it’s bedtime, I sometimes turn in WIDE AWAKE. As a result, my bedtime routine has sort of been like a lab experiment. I’ve tried a lot of things, including Tylenol PM (always good, but I limit that for extreme emergencies) and Melatonin (again, don’t want to start a habit). Below are some natural remedies that work well for me.

  1. Gold, liquid gold. As in pour me some Golden Milk. For a soothing warm drink that helps you sleep and fights inflammation, mix a teaspoon of Golden Milk to your favorite non-dairy milk (I like this Flaxmilk). You’ll be toasty - warm and relaxed before you hit the hay.

  2. Do you fall asleep dreaming of chocolate snacks the next day? Or not fall asleep thinking of chocolate? If so, give try some Good Day (I know, right?) Chocolate sleep or calm supplements. They are like magical (& GIANT) M&M’s that help you sleep. The side of the box has easy to read guidelines for how many to take, so you can be sure your love of chocolate doesn’t send you too far into dreamland. And bonus? The company also makes Tumeric and Energy chocolates for daytime use. Sound too good to be true, like these tasty treats could be made out of crappy ingredients? Nope… they are made with premium Fair-Trade certified milk chocolate, chamomile flower blend, amino acids, and from non-GMO ingredients. Plus, bonus - the candy-coated colors are made from fruits and veggies.

  3. Let’s say you don’t want to start a chocolate thing before bed. No prob, I get that. This sort of thing is the very reason I don’t make cookies any more… #can’tstopwon’tstopatonespoonful of dough. Instead, heat up a cup of water, and throw in a bag of nighttime tea. There are so many varieties to choose from! I like good old Celestial Seasonings Sleepy Time Tea or Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night tea.

  4. However… let’s say you’re reading this at 8:30 at night when you’re wired, and have none of the above products in your house. Here’s a quick fix to try. Heat up a cup of hot water. Add two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar and two tablespoons of raw honey. Stir. Drink. And… goodnight. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? Well, apparently honey and vinegar medicinal concoctions go way back… to the Ming Dynasty and Ancient Greeks. Check out this article for the history of this sleepy combo.

  5. While we’re on the beverage train, let’s talk locomotives. If you want your train to leave the station in the am like it should, try CALM. This fizzy beverage comes in many flavors (I like raspberry-lemonade) and can be consumed warm or cold. Its plentiful dose of magnesium promises to keep you regular… and well, Calm. (Translation - it helps with sleep and #2.)

  6. Finally, I’ve been hearing about the great benefits of weighted blankets for sleep and general relaxation. I’ve dropped a few hints to Santa, so hopefully I’ll be writing a post on this in the New Year. In the meantime, here’s the article I sent to Santa for reviews on various brands of blankets.
